Groundwater, chlorinated water, and wastewater all differ from one another in terms of their chemical makeup, as well as in how they find their way through different plumbing configurations. Each requires a pump made of material that won’t corrode under the given circumstances.
Wastewater or sewage pumps, for instance, need to be able to handle a substance that is roughly 94% water by volume. When that material has been ground into a muddier, runnier substance, it will typically move through pipes in much the same manner as water does. Pumps used by wells may not deal with the same caustic compounds that plague wastewater pumps, but they do tend to deal with groundwater that can be infiltrated by sand. Such a compound can have the effect of grinding through the insides of a pump – something that’s taken into account when building pumps for this purpose.
Chlorine pools use a version of a chemical pump that is made especially to deal with these harsher liquids. Some pumps are designed in ways that transport the chlorine to the pool without having it come into contact with certain internal parts – something that’s preferred by many pump operators.
