Time to know Centrifugal Pump Repair

Centrifugal pumps are extremely efficient and versatile fluid flow devices, but they can be prone to mechanical problems. They rely on the movements of an impeller within the line, and that impeller can easily become degraded over time, or damaged by any solids within the liquid being pumped.  So, it’s vital to know when pump repair is called for.  That way, you can fix the problem before it gets any worse or starts to cause major disruption to your operation.

Here are some of the most common signs.

Three Ways to Know You Need Specialized Pump Repair Services

Failure to start
Obviously, if your pump will not start at all, that’s a major issue.  However, before you call for repair, check the external electrical situation.  While there can be situations where a pump becomes completely “dead,” most of the time it’s actually due to something like a tripped breaker.
However, if you attempt to start the pump and hear any sort of unusual noises within, along with a failure to start, discontinue immediately and call for service.  That likely means there’s a major blockage inside and continuing to try to start the unit could burn out the motor.

Leaks
Leaks should always be taken seriously, no matter how minor.  If there is a nearby seal which can be manually tightened, try to tighten it and see if that fixes the leak.  If not, you’ll probably need to get a specialist in to look for the source of the leak.

Reduced flow
The most common sign that there are problems with a pump is a reduction in the overall liquid flow.  However, there can be a few different causes for this.  Most likely, it’s due to some sort of partial clog in the line, but the clog could be anywhere throughout the pump and associated piping.  Unless the problem is immediately obvious, you’ll probably need to call for service.
Another possibility is that the impeller has become damaged.  Any harm done to the blades of the impeller will reduce the liquid flow.

The problem could also be caused by more general wearing or damage within the unit, such as to the wear ring or wear plate.  As internal components degrade, it opens up more space within the pump, reducing overall pressure and flow.
